Rethink messy beach waves for fall by taking your cue from what we saw at Fashion Week for Fall/Winter 2018. At Peter Pilotto models walked the runway in boho waves right out of 1970s London, while at Tory Burch there was lots of loose movement in the hair — think of it as effortlessly chic. Meanwhile, models embraced the Tommy Hilfiger lifestyle in loose curl with a bit of an edge. Duplicate these looks with timesaving tips that may seem counterintuitive but really work (you’re ditching your curling iron for a flat iron). The secret according to Elchim Brand Ambassador Anthony Pazos is to blow-dry the hair straight and add the texture you want with the Elchim Nature’s Touch Flat Iron.
Step 1: Apply a thermal shield spray before blow-drying the hair with the Elchim 3900 Healthy Ionic Dryer to provide a layer of protection and ensure that curls last longer.
Step 2: Using a large-barrel boar-bristle brush, blow-dry the hair in 2” sections, starting at the bottom and working your way up the head, clipping excess hair out of the way. Remember, the bigger the brush, the straighter the hair, and that’s the idea. You want to eliminate frizz before adding texture.
Step 3: Place your Elchim Nature’s Touch Flat Iron on the highest setting. Starting at the bottom, spray a workable hairspray on a 2” section of hair. Clamp the iron on the hair at the root. In one motion, twist your wrist forward and down, creating a curling motion all the way through the hair shaft, stopping just before you reach the ends, which should be a bit straighter. Use light pressure so the hair glides through the plates.
Step 4: Look at the hair visually to make sure there’s enough texture and curl. Mist the hair with spray wax or apply dry shampoo to the roots only.
Step 5: Work some serum into the palms of your hands and disperse evenly before finger-combing the hair to take away any unwanted frizz. Start at the ends to create that piecey separation you want.
Elchim Brand Ambassador Anthony Pazos recommends this trick for girls with very curly hair who want to amplify texture but don’t have a curling iron on hand.
Step 1: Wrap the handle of a makeup brush in foil. Remember, the thinner the handle, the tighter the curl. The foil is crucial because it creates a barrier to heat.
Step 2: Set your Elchim Nature’s Touch Flat Iron to the highest setting. Clamp the flat iron over the handle of the makeup brush and apply heat evenly.
Step 3: Unravel the hair from the brush handle. The curls will mimic the exact shape of the handle. Continue working your way around the head until you achieve the results you want.
Step 4: Look in the mirror and finger-rake each curl, waiting until they have cooled completely so they’ll last longer.
Step 5: Work some serum into the palms of your hands and apply to each curl. Be careful not to over-saturate the root area. Use a finishing spray to lock curls into place.
